When Moroni write to Ammoron his intent was to secure the best possible prisoner exchange but he stuck by his highest demand rather than accepting the minimum of what he wanted. The end result was that he took a city, increased his number of prisoners, and freed all the Nephites who had been prisoners.
Ammoron was unwise to poke the bear.
