This evening Andy and Marsha invited people to help them put up the kayak and boat from our Bear Lake trip. Most of the families offered some help. It was more work than I anticipated but it was good to assist them. Afterward we volunteered to take the trailer back to Andy’s house in Salem. We discovered when we got off the freeway in Spanish Fork that one trailer your was flat. We spent the next couple of hours securing the trailer with Andy’s help. It was still good to help them out but when you offer to serve it is best not to limit what you are willing to do in most cases. True service gives what is needed, not just what we expect will be needed.

Sister Barnes said that when our hearts are hardened, our eyes are blinded, and our ears dull of hearing we will be unable to feel, to see, or to hear the truth and we will be unable to be converted or to be healed by Christ.
When I heard that it made me think of Laura. I think that the effects of bipolar helped to fill her spiritual hearing so that she had a hard time hearing the truth. That has affected her ability to come to Christ and receive His healing through all our trials.
I realized that the stories of Alma and Saul are very different from each other in that Alma knew he was rebelling where Saul believed up to that point that he was doing the right thing.
I have often said that mortality was intended to help us learn how to make correct choices – choices consistent with what the Lord would be choosing in our place. I’m realizing now that we are not intended to do things on our own, rather we are supposed to learn how to make correct choices but to do so in concert with our Heavenly Father, not independent of Him. The key is to make a part of ourselves and part of our nature the characteristics and perspectives of God but not too operate independent of Him. Nephi was given sealing power because “{he would} not ask that which is contrary to {the will of God}” but even with that, he didn’t smite the earth with famine – he prayed for Heavenly Father to bring famine in place of war.
