Today we bid farewell to Jasper. I had always expected that we would have a few months with him after Mitzi died but here we are less than two months later and in the morning when Isaac went to feed him he ignored the food and basically wouldn’t move. Isaac called me down to have a look and I find a very old and tired dwarf hamster. He didn’t look sick like his dad, Elliot, had or weak like Mitzi had, but he was clearly tired and soon to go the way of all the Earth. I held him for a while, talking to him and showing him to various members of the family. We knew that he might not make it through the day. I set him down in the nest he had made and allowed him to rest there.
Later in the afternoon when I went into the room I checked on Jasper and he was no longer breathing. I suspect he’d already been dead for an hour or more by then. After a life that had many adventures early he died peacefully in the end but without much warning.
