I was greeted this morning for my 1-on-1 with Matt buy being presented with a 90-day performance improvement plan. Considering that I was already questioning if I was in the right line of work and the complete lack of trust that I have in Matt, my immediate thought was that I should plan to have a new job within 90 days. I don’t really care to write this but I feel it important to record my beliefs about this move. First, I don’t have any expectations that Matt actually wants to keep me around – even if I were a better Product Manager. I think he’d like me to resign. Assuming I don’t I expect that he has one of two intentions at the end of 90 days. Either he plans to fire me anyway (barring a miraculous turnaround on my part) or else he’s laying a ground work for future PIPs to establish a pattern of me facing disciplinary action and consequently depriving me of bonuses and raises (like he did this last year) in order to incentivize me to leave or justify him firing me when he gets tired of the game.
