Moroni warns the modern reader to avoid letting the secret combinations “get above you” and later he declares that these secret combinations will be “among you.” I think that difference is important. It is naive to think that there are no secret combinations in our society but we must strive against their rise to power lest they become too powerful and get above us or above our ability to counter them. That is what leads to them gaining sole management of the government as they did among the Nephites.
