As missionaries we were taught to invite people to make commitments based on what we were teaching. While that is a true pattern I think we generally see the reverse of the true pattern. While we should look for opportunities to have people make commitments we would do well to recognize that those who are truly prepared to receive the word will seek for ways to take action. They will ask what they should do as the father of Lamoni did. We shouldn’t have to push them into making commitments because if they have heard the word with an open heart they will want to act on it even if they don’t know the best way to do so. They may not always ask what to do but they should rarely be resistant when we suggest an action to take.
