Who chose Cezoram?

I had always assumed that when Nephi yielded up the judgement seat to Cezoram it was he who chose his replacement, like when Alma choose Nephihah. Tonight I considered other alternatives. Nephi might have called for an election or vote of confidence as he was finding it hard to govern a wicked people. Alternatively the people could have called for a new vote on who should be chief judge. In either if those cases the people would have selected Cezoram and we can’t assume that he was a righteous man as I had always assumed under the theory that Nephi chose him.
