Saving a bird

We’ve had cats bring us the mice they have killed as trophies. They have learned not to bring them inside the house. Today Laura was surprised to find George had brought a bird as his trophy – and it was still alive. When I went to help out, George choose to go inside leaving the injured bird next to the door. I found a cardboard box and Ezra helped me gather pine needles to cover and provide some minimal protection for the bird. I took the box into the garage to further protect the bird from wind and weather (it was our first snow day of the season).

We periodically checked on the bird throughout the day and it was always breathing and seemed to get stronger over time. Eventually in the evening one of the boys (Ezra or Noah) checked and saw that the bird had hoped up into the edge of the box. At that point I decided to find a safe place to release it outside. While trying to make that plan the bird flu out of the box and around the garage before landing on the windshield of the Subaru.

At that point I got the bird on some papers and carried it across the street. When I tried to release it into the branches of a pine tree it opted to fly into a nearby the instead. It was an ending that everyone could live with.
