Mormon recognized that even after the Nephites had been destroyed the care if the sacred records was not to be abandoned so long as a righteous person lived. With his people wiped out he only had himself and his son, Moroni, who could take charge of the plates. I expect that he told Moroni everything he still wanted to record and agreed that if one of them was killed the other would be the final guardian of the records. Likely they both assumed that Moroni would live longest.
It took about 15 years after that last battle before Moroni was able to work on the record. By then Mormon had been killed and Moroni could witness that the destruction of the Nephites had not brought peace to the Lamanites.
