Why did they need Judas?

Is it a testament to how ordinary Jesus appeared that the chief priests needed Judas to identify Jesus away from the crowds? They had seen Him teaching in the temple and based on who the crowds were listening to it would be easy to identify Him there. If His look was distinct they should therefore have been able to recognize Him anywhere after having observed Him in the temple. The fact that they needed Judas to identify Him when there were no crowds around suggests that he looked similar to one or more of His companions.
