Martin Harris was asking Joseph to show him the plates. Joseph was instructed to tell Martin that he was under covenant not to and that he had no power to do anything with the plates unless the Lord commanded it. Joseph was meant to be the first some witness of the plates to the world. He also gave Martin something to hope for in revealing that the Lord would choose 3 witnesses at some point to support Joseph and those three witnesses would be down the plates not by Joseph but through the power of heaven. I would imagine that from that time forth Martin determined to be one of those witnesses.
