Choose you this day

Laura told me that she had begun to feel unsettled about Alyssa’s queer identity and gay pride and then she thought about the contrast with Savannah preparing for a mission and she had the thought that she could not serve both masters – that she needed to choose whether she would follow the path of the world (the one where queerness was celebrated) or the gospel path. She told me that she is committed to coming fully back into the covenant fold in her heart. That was happy news. I had already seen her moving in this direction but having her explicitly choose it and openly declare her choice was a good step.

In saying this I have to clarify that I see no impediment to loving and supporting Alyssa even as she identifies herself as queer – we can do that without compromising on our principles and our faith. There may be things we don’t agree on but we can just be loving and supportive even if Alyssa can’t reconcile herself with some doctrine. The fact that Alyssa asked me yesterday about getting a patriarchal blessing gives me hope that she too is still determined to cling to the gospel.
