After nearly 30 years of driving I got in my first accident on the freeway. Traffic came to a standstill and I stopped safely and felt good that there was lots of space behind me clear of cars. About 3 seconds later I was suddenly hit from behind. My car was in amazingly good shape—it looks like the bumper collapsed on impact and bounced back into shape leaving scratches and a little crease where it had bent. After a few seconds I realized I was feeling mild shock and then I noticed my neck hurting a little bit—hopefully that turns out to be minor. I tried calling 911 but before we got connected a highway patrol officer arrived.
The lady who hit me was very flustered and apologetic but otherwise seemed unhurt. Her front bumper was hanging off her car on the sides though so her car looked worse than mine.
The whole thing cost me a little more than an hour extra getting home but hopefully getting everything fixed will be painless.
