Because Nephi tells us in chapter 1 that Lehi has a vision and paged in Jerusalem and them starts chapter 2 with Lehi being warned that the people sought his life it is easy to conclude that he only pushed briefly before he was driven from the land. While it is possible that it only took a short time I feel it is more likely that Lehi was preaching for a decent length of time before the people thought to kill him. I think he had spent a good deal of time after his vision preaching and becoming more practiced in his obedience before he was driven out of the land. His children had had time to become settled in their opinions regarding his actions. Laman and Lemuel had time to be influenced by their unrighteous peers in Jerusalem.
