Not that this is a new concept for me but the full version of Proverbs 3:12 is “For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
Tonight that hit me differently because I know by experience that only a father who does not delight in his son would refrain from correcting him betimes. He wants to give all the wisdom and knowledge he can to the son he loves but when he holds no love for a son he would be all the more willing to let his son enroll in the school of hard knocks. (For a loving father, sometimes he may choose the school of hard knocks for a son who insists on it but only an unloving father would choose that for a son who might be amenable to instruction.)
