The role of the prophet is to earn the people as a watchman on the tower. If he warns then he will be free of guilt if they do not heed. If he fails to warn he will answer for their guilt
It is also interesting that the Lord has Ezekiel explicitly say that while the Lord warns that the wicked will perish he has no desire for them to perish. The warning is in hopes that they will change. His goal is not to kill the wicked but to turn them to righteousness and thus kill wickedness. Likewise he warns the righteous that they cannot rest on their past righteousness because it will not save them if they do not continue in righteousness.
