A perfect “lesson”

I didn’t record this at the time but it deserves to be recorded and I am grateful for the experience.

On Sunday I was assigned to lead the discussion in teacher council for the teachers and leaders of the priesthood, relief society, young men and young women organizations. We were discussing inviting diligent learning and while the church the day before—vacuuming the room where the teacher council would be held—I was impressed by the fact that the most a teacher can reliably do is foster an atmosphere where the Spirit can teach and where students have the opportunity to experience that Spirit and be exposed to gospel learning.

I opened the Teacher Council by assuring those there that I expected to learn more than I taught there. We had a fantastic discussion about the way church teachers support gospel learning that is centered in the home and how to give invitations to students. Some of the Young Women leaders talked about a way they give the girls a forum to share as they respond to the invitations they’ve been given. While I made a few comments in response to what people were saying I mostly stayed silent and pointed to those who should speak next as people raised their hands. It was a lovely outpouring of the Spirit.
