What Is True?

He is speaking against abuse—probably because of the recent stories claiming that the church covers up abuse and protects abusers from legal consequence.

Abuse constitutes the influence of the adversary. It is a grievous sin. As President of the Church, I affirm the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ on this issue. Let me be perfectly clear: any kind of abuse of women, children, or anyone is an abomination to the Lord. He grieves and I grieve whenever anyone is harmed. He mourns and we all mourn for each person who has fallen victim to abuse of any kind. Those who perpetrate these hideous acts are not only accountable to the laws of man but will also face the wrath of Almighty God.

… The Savior will not tolerate abuse, and as His disciples, neither can we.

The overriding motivation in decisions should be to protect the innocent from harm.

Some would have us believe that truth is relative—that each person should determine for himself or herself what is true. Such a belief is but wishful thinking for those who mistakenly think they will not also be accountable to God.

The reality is that each person should determine for himself or herself what is true—their knowledge should be individual and not dependent on others—but nobody will ultimately answer to themselves. Anyone may believe an untrue thing to be true but eventually they will have to reconcile their belief with what God knows to be true.
