When the chosen people question the value of their fasting the Lord reminds them that keeping the letter of the law is off little value when they refuse to keep the Spirit of the law. Their fasting was to check a box of to be seen as righteous but their hearts were not tuned to the Lord. He tells them that fasting holds less value to Him than looking after the widows and fatherless but that their fathers refused to hear the cries of the oppressed or to offer their shoulders for strength to the downtrodden.
