Why did the Roman soldiers mock Jesus and clothe Him in purple and place the crown of thorns in His head? This was not soldiers simply doing their duty, these were course men taking pleasure in torturing an apparently helpless subject. While they may not have truly understood the identity and character of the one they mocked, they should have known as human beings that such mockery was wrong.
It seems to me that the accounts in matter and Mark of the trial and certification of Jesus are more perfectly similar than any other option of their accounts. They are largely word for word in much of their content.
