Words without authority

The exorcists who tried to cast out an evil spirit saying “we adjure the by Jesus whom Paul preacheth” said the right kind of words but lacked any authority to invoke the name of Christ. The evil spirit testified as much by acknowledging that he recognized the authority both of Jesus and of Paul.

We can do the same in our day, saying the right words for an ordinance or blessing but without first developing the faith, and where necessary receiving the proper authority, to make the words have any effect. (Blessings and ordinances require proper priesthood ordination, words of testimony and counsel do not but without faith they have no power to invite the holy ghost to confirm them.)

I’m discovering a greater, more informed and specific appreciation for Paul. He truly was remarkable.
