Paul talks about false Apostles, men who come preaching the name of Christ but not the doctrine of Christ. It seems clear that their motivation is to build up their own popularity and influence among Christians by invoking the name of Christ. This sounds like Tim Ballard today (to use a present example of someone who set himself up invoking the church and the names of church leaders to build up his own reputation) — it is essentially priestcraft as defined by Alma: men seeing themselves up for gain.
