In word and deed He doth require
God loved us so He sent His Son verse 4
My will to His like son to sire
Be made to bend and I, as son,
Learn conduct from the Holy One.
I’ve always loved this verse but I thought about a telling analogy today. If someone has the opportunity to be an apprentice to God it would be a privilege to have such a position, to imitate (however imperfectly) and learn from the perfect Master.
Nobody, least of all the apprentice, would consider the student equal to the one he seeks to emulate but both the apprentice and those who accept his poor replicas of the master’s work (at a fraction of the cost of more skilled versions from the Master) benefit from the effort that the apprentice makes to duplicate the work of his exemplar.
