We know that those who did not hold fast to the rod of iron would wander off the path that leads to eternal life when the mists of darkness come but I’ve never thought of the implications of people who wander onto the path without first finding the iron rod. It does happen. Without any particular guidance or doctrine people can slide into positive, righteous patterns of living and real the benefits of righteous living. When they do they are within reach of the iron rod and it is ready for them to grab ahold even with mists of darkness—much easier than trying to lead people through darkness before they can reach the rod. People on the path who do not grasp the rod will find themselves wandering away from the path as they encounter the mists just as easily as they wandered onto the path without the rod to guide them.
