I notice that Nephi’s brothers started asking other questions only after they were satisfied with the answer to the first question and were pacified towards the Lord. It is also likely that Nephi didn’t give that answer immediately. I get the impression that he spoke to them multiple times, expanding on previous answers with more information on the topic until they were finally satisfied.
