Nephi says he was shown from time to time how to construct the ship. That made me contemplate that he might not have known what type of do he was building when he started making tools. Here he indicates that he had been shown the ship he would be building before he asked where to find ore. So I conclude that there were specifics he still had to learn and maybe just details he needed to be reminded of from time to time but he knew what kind of tools he would be making because he knew what kind of ship he would be building.
