I was listening to an interview Elder Bernard did with a son and daughter of Jeffrey and Patricia Holland about what their home was like growing up. They described a home I would love to have but definitely don’t. As they talked I was drawn to the concept of establishing sacred times and holy places.
The sacred times in our homes would be things like family prayer, scriptures study, family home evening, even family dinner potentially. Today Laura suggested that we start making breakfast and then do scripture l family scripture study while the kids eat. There is some real merit to that idea although if it falls entirely on me to make it happen it will utterly fail.
The holy places in our homes are places of peace that we establish. In the Holland home it included a study place where parents studied their scriptures and prayed and invited children in for conversations. If there is one thing that does not exist in our house it is a holy space. I desperately want to establish one. I may need to limit the space to myself until Laura can actually keep it holy rather than invite the kids or the Internet in to disrupt the peace.
Their daughter indicated that even to this day, in her 50’s, when she is in trouble or having a struggle the place she wants to be more than anywhere is her parents home.
