Caucus report

Despite my long running reservations with the Utah GOP I registered as a Republican to attend caucus night again for one purpose: to vote against Trump. (The party decided to hold the vote on caucus night rather than in a primary where more people would participate.) As I was there listening to the party platform I began to realize just how much I distrust the caucus system now and how much I think the party platform is meaningless.

As for this caucus night, a couple of good things happened. In our precinct Trump got just over half as many votes as Nikki Haley. Also, we had someone nominated for precinct chair who turned out to clearly favor Trump. When his position was clear someone asked to reopen nominations before we voted and thankfully we selected someone who was more traditionally Republican in their views.

I was nominated for two positions but I wasn’t disappointed to lose both as I no longer want to be associated with the party. I also enjoyed helping to count the votes for the state and county delegate elections.
