  • Retirement planning
    • I may always carry disappointment anticipating that I won’t get to retire at all early (hopefully that will dissipate after I actually do retire).
    • I looked at my social security status and saw that I could get 3k/month starting at 67 or nearly 4k/month if I wait until 70. It made me hopeful that even if I can’t retire early we should be able to survive on my social security and my retirement account—although we couldn’t do much with that.
    • Looking at my social security made me realize that Laura probably isn’t qualified for ANY independent social security but that if she went to work long enough to qualify we could easily have an extra 1k/month or more to help us through. That might be enough incentive for her to go back to work, even part time, for a few years.
    • I wouldn’t feel bad about not retiring early if I felt I was being useful in building the kingdom of God even during my working years. That could be through a calling or it could be building a family that wasn’t apostate or it could be making a difference in my community somehow. At present, none of those things apply.
  • What would make me feel useful and what, within my agency, can I do to accomplish anything that would make me feel useful?
    • “How, within my current capacity can I be of service to people?”
      • That’s a question I should ask regularly.
    • I can always do family history work.
      • That doesn’t generally interest me because aside from doing temple work, which I already do, I don’t feel like I make a difference in any lives that way.
      • I guess it feels like that’s what you do if you really feel called to it or if the Lord has no other use for you in his work and I’m afraid of what would happen to me if I conclude that I’m already washed up.
    • What can I do to be of service to living people or to people in the future?
  • I feel like this is a fruitful line of inquiry
