What made Alma question?

I wonder what prompted Alma to diligently seek answers concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection. I feel confident in thinking that his time of dread before turning to Christ informed his understanding of the awful state of the wicked. Perhaps the day of family members has him asking “I know the overall plan but what happens now after they die and before the resurrection has been activated?”
