What changed in the Fall?

…they had become carnal, sensual, and devilish, by nature…

Alma 42:10

Perhaps I am reading too much into this but it sounds like the result of the fall was that human nature changed to become carnal, sensual, and devilish—as is before that, in their state of innocence, they were motivated by something other than base desires, perhaps curiosity and wonder. It sounds a lot like puberty where people often get overwhelmed by emotional and chemical urges.

I think we can recognize that it wasn’t puberty based on the fact that we baptize children at age 8 when they have already become capable of having fallen but have not yet begun puberty. Infants on the other hand, while often driven by temporal desires like hunger, fatigue, or other discomfort, do not have the capacity to fall.

I would say that the fall happens when individuals gain a sense of their own individuality and volition—the capacity for self-determination. Before that time, they will do whatever they are led to do without serious consideration of any alternative path.

Eve: “Adam, do you intend to obey all of Father’s commandments?”

Adam: “Yes, all of them.”

This was Adam before the Fall (although I believe he still intended to obey to the best of his ability after the Fall).
