I failed to mention yesterday that Alex activated his emotional escape hatch. Over the summer he got my permission to stay with his friend Isaiah if he felt he needed space. He was smart enough to get my okay before he verified with Isaiah’s parents if they were willing. I think he stayed there 1 night over the summer but yesterday he got frustrated with the Wi-Fi because I had to pause his access so that I could actually work because his game downloads were monopolizing our bandwidth. His frustration increased when I pushed back on his baseless assertion that slow internet was the reason he doesn’t have a job.
Maybe an hour later Laura got a text from Isaiah’s mom that Alex was planning to spend a couple of days there “because he was having a mutual health crisis because of his dad.” I’m sure that’s what he said but based on the fact that he took his computers, his motivation might have been to go use their Internet to finish his downloads. I’ll be shocked if he comes home before they have finished.
Frankly at this point I expect that Alex will try to go live with Isaiah as soon as we suggest he has to pay rent. (Our plan is to do that next year unless we skip rent and just tell him he has to move out by that September.)
