A feeling in the air

I watched Unite for America tonight—a gathering for the Harris campaign where the many groups that held fundraising calls for the campaign earlier got together. It was hosted or MC’d by Oprah Winfrey but I was struck by the tenor of the gathering. It was joyful, earnest, inclusive, and tender. While there were comments about wanting to turn the page on Trump there was no disparaging of people who are inclined to vote for Trump. It was “we as Americans.” The other thing that struck me was the way Kamala Harris listened to the various people who came with questions or stories to tell. People grieved together with the family of a woman who received delayed medical care because of a very restrictive state abortion ban and with a girl who was shot in a recent school shooting but even with the grieving there was a hope and determination that we can bring people together to solve those problems going forward. Afterwards I wondered to myself if Trump has ever truly sat and listened to someone like that. I’m more and more convinced that these campaigns are morally polar opposites. I’m also more and more hopeful that the outcome will be resounding for Harris—that the people of this nation will price that despite the polls they are better than to have a nailbiter between a campaign that is so compassionate and one that is so calloused.
