  • Optimizing effective effort
    • Spinning wheels
      • This is what happens when committing more resources to an effort than are effective.
      • It is ineffective because energy that might otherwise be effective is unusable because the problem/system is unable to incorporate it.
      • Obsessing over politics to an unhealthy degree.
    • Idling engine
      • This is what happens when not committing enough resources to an effort.
      • It is ineffective because whatever energy is output is insufficient to affect the momentum of the problem/system.
      • Ignoring politics except possibly to cast an uninformed or barely informed vote.
      • Dreaming about policy without any avenue to try to implement it.
    • Maintaining traction
      • This is where enough energy is expended to affect the system in a controlled way.
      • It requires sufficient energy applied in ways that drive the problem/system in desirable directions.
      • This is the happy medium where the tires are in motion and gripping the pavement.
      • I’m trying to figure out how much time/energy/money I can effectively spend toward improving our political environment and where those resources should be most effectively deployed.
