Morning says that the people thought he could deliver them but that he was without hope. He obviously recognized that the day of grace was past with the Nephites but that makes me wonder why he would choose to lead them when he couldn’t hope to save them. I suspect the answer is that while he has no hope of saving the Nephites as a people he had some hope of either saving some individuals or of helping to improve the lives of the people for as long as they remained. In other words, he probably was not acting without hope, just without hope of ultimately preserving what was left of their nation.
