How shall we ask?

When Peter and John requested different things from Christ the Savior explained to Peter that there was no reason to feel they had been treated unequally in receiving different promises because “ye both joy in that which ye have desired.” (Doctrine & Covenants 7:8) This tells me it is more important to figure out what you want so that you can ask for that which brings you joy rather than comparing what someone else is getting to decide if you can get the same thing.

I also realize that the counsel to “study it out in your mind” that the Lord told Oliver Cowdery he needed to do before “ask{ing} me if it be right” (Doctrine & Covenants 9:8) applies to asking for our desires as much as it does to asking about the correct translation of sacred ancient records.
