It’s easy to overlook how much was riding on Martin Harris. When he asked Joseph to show him the plates the Lord promised that three witnesses would be down the plates by the power of God and not just by Joseph showing them. He also said that if Martin humbled himself he could be along the three. This was a greater witness than Martin had imagined. The thing we overlook is that the Lord warned Joseph that if Martin did not heed this invitation that Joseph would soon need to take a break from translation and Martin would no longer have opportunity to assist in the work
“Humble yourself and I offer more than you even asked for but if you refuse you will lose even what you have already obtained” is a pattern for how the Lord works with those who begin to think of themselves as especially important in His work.
