“Ye cannot go amiss” isn’t universally true. When we have been called to do a specific thing (go to a specific place, fulfill a specific calling etc.) it would be going amiss to do something else instead. In this case, Stephen Burnett was called to preach but the direction was left to his discretion and thus he could not go amiss regarding direction. He certainly could have gone amiss by keeping silent.
When we know what we are called to do we cannot go amiss so long as we act within that calling in all diligence.
