I hadn’t known that William W. Phelps had aspirations to become lieutenant governor of New York before he learned of and joined the church. It seems that he didn’t the same kind of drive and energy in living the restored gospel once he found it although there was a rough period in Missouri when he testified against the property and was excommunicated from the church. He returned to the church much faster than most who were excommunicated under comparable circumstances. Later he was again excommunicated for two days over an unauthorized plural marriage.
