John Taylor is the only prophet of the church so far who was born outside the United States. He was called with the others to fill vacancies in the quorum of the twelve less than three years after joining the church. He served faithfully through the trials of Missouri, the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (where he was also shot), the trek west, and the most severe persecutions against the practice of polygamy before he died. He even led the church from edible for two and a half years because of the legal injunctions against those practicing polygamy.
Before today I hadn’t noticed the fact that he was named in a revelation in the doctrine and covenants but he was when he was called to be an apostle.
