When Nephi sees the vision of the tree of life and learns the interpretation he sees two sources of water. First he sees the fountain of righteousness which seems to originate at the tree and then he sees the river of filthiness which runs near the path with the iron rod.
Nephi also sees the savior rejected by the people before the Spirit of God touches the hearts of the children of men. Then Christ his among the people healing the sick etc.
