The records doesn’t indicate that Amalikiah was opposed to the church of God or its teachings specifically (although Amalikiah obviously hated what Helaman and his brethren were teaching) but those who believed Helaman weren’t persuaded by Amalikiah while this who didn’t believe Helaman were (including some from within the church).
The people who believed Helaman presumably remembered the captivity of earlier generations and the dangers of a wicked king whole those who rejected such teachings welcomed the possibility of having such an impressive king as Amalikiah promised to be.
