Joseph probably left for Egypt before Herod had even concluded that the site men had left without returning to him. In other words, Joseph and Mary left for Egypt with Jesus before Herod was even decoding to have the young boys of Bethlehem killed. Joseph and Mary weren’t fleeing after hearing an edict that would threaten Jesus.
