Did Nephi need the assurance that the lord was pleased with Him not because of the work and trials he had already experienced but for that which was shortly to come?
When Nephi declared the message that the Loud instructed him to share (repent or be smitten even into destruction) the people began contending among themselves to the point of killing each other. In other words, as a result of sharing that message things went downhill. If he were less than completely sure of how the Lord felt about him and that it was Good who wanted that message shared with the people, it would have been easy to think that he was sharing the wrong message for his time.
