“Be ye followers of me…”

Considering how forcefully Paul explains that Christ is the only foundation and that all those who labor in His work, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephus, were not to be accounted of personally – that the value from their work was all due to Chris – it was surprising to see Paul invite the people to be followers of him. That appears to be a mixed message. I think I am misunderstanding him somehow.
