The people of Limhi choose him as their King in a hurry probably because he was the obvious choice. It is unlikely that the Lamanites would accept that someone else was the leader while there was a sin of the former King among the people. The fact that he was the son of the former King may have made them even more adamant that he promise to deliver his father into their hands, they would want some evidence that he wasn’t hiding the his father or planning something devious.
