Prepared for the invitation to repent

I think the Lord intended that the Nephites should be prepared for the invitation to repent. That was why He would have Mormon not preach until after they had nearly been destroyed and then had been preserved. When He told Mormon to call the people to repentance He did so knowing that they would never be better prepared to receive the message (even though He surely knew that fee would be receptive).
