Three witnesses

Those close to Joseph Smith would surely have heard that the record he was translating included a prophecy that three people would be shown the record by the power of God. Thus Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris knew of that promise and likely each had a promoting that they could be among the three so that they reach requested to be among the witnesses. They may not have been the only ones to make such a request.
