Today we had the experience of seeing a total solar eclipse. The event was awe inspiring. The moment that the moon fully covered the sun all the people began to cheer and exclaim their amazement (despite the fact that they all anticipated the event). No picture can capture what we saw with it eyes and felt with our bodies and spirits.
I think the Lord uses such things to remind His children that there is something greater than themselves in nature. That tiny dot on that tiny sun made us feel tiny but connected to something significant.
As we watched the eclipse we talked about how it must have made our ancient ancestors, who didn’t know the cause of what they were experiencing, feel. As I read 3 Nephi 11 afterward I couldn’t help but imagine how the Nephites felt when Christ came.
As I talked to Mom on the phone tonight about the eclipse (she hadn’t gone to see totality) she wondered if it was comparable to the coming of Christ and the signs that accompanied that. I replied that I thought those things would have a familiar quality to the total eclipse but would be orders of magnitude more awe inspiring.
