It’s hard to imagine that the Lamanites took time to question a Nephite on if he would deny Christ but perhaps it was akin to what Captain Moroni had done generations earlier where any who would swear to uphold the title of liberty were allowed to live peaceably among the Nephites. For the Lamanites, if someone who was seen as a threat was willing to deny the Christ they felt safe in allowing them to live.
